Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is an ancient rock fortress located near the town of Dambulla in Central Province, Sri Lanka.
It is a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of granite nearly 200m high.
You can ascend the rock by way of a vertiginous metal stair that clings to the rock-face.
It is a moderately difficult but rewarding climb as you pass through caves with outstanding wall paintings, and the view from the top is spectacular.
