For those who yearn for the authentic experience I can wholeheartedly recommend a stay with Motty Mathew at his beautiful new homestay on the backwaters near Muhamma. Motty and his wife Lali are delightful hosts and Lali is an excellent (published) cook to boot. The traditional house is comfortable and very welcoming, and Motty is a font of knowledge of all things Kerala and the backwaters.
